Cooking Matters.

So this week I start my volunteering with the Tarrant Area Food Bank in the Cooking Matters Program. This is a program designed for people who are trying to eat healthier and make their grocery budget go the farthest. It is designed  to focus on the My Plate Standards which is a good start for anyone who is eating SAD (Standard American Diet ). It is also shows people how to actually cook foods that they would not normal use as well as how to read labels and what good nutrition looks like.

I was shocked by the statistics I heard in the Training class. Here in the DFW area 1 in 4 children are food insecure. We also have one of the worst rates for child obesity. The two sound like two different problems, but the truth is they are interconnected. White Flour, High Calorie, White Sugar, and Nutrient Poor food is CHEAP. Think about  it you can get 14 Burgers at McDonald's for $15.00 and you'll feel full ,but you don't have any of the vitamins or nutrients that you need for proper health.

So wish me luck in my new endeavor. If I can help just one person it will be a success.
